Franpi Barriaux - Citizen Jazz

Recorded at the end of 2010 in Tours as part of the Total Meeting Festival, this Live, the fruit of a furiously libertarian quartet, had benefited from a passage on France Musique in the show A L'improviste by Anne Montaron before ending up at NoBusiness. This Baltic label, a pioneer if ever there was one, which has often allowed the diffusion of big names in European improvised music, presents here the formation of Rouennais Nicolas Lelièvre, accompanied by big names such as Carlos Zingaro or Jean-Luc Cappozzo.

This young drummer does not yet enjoy the same recognition as his glorious elders, but the latter have not been mistaken, having shared the stage with him for years. On his calling card, let us mention in particular meetings with Joëlle Léandre and the old complicity that binds him to Carlos Zingaro. The Lusitanian violinist joins him here in a formation whose outline we were able to discover during the Jazz à Part festival . Over time, Lelièvre's playing has gained in depth in proportion to what he has curbed in impetuosity. The space that he now leaves to his companions allows to dig the deep furrows of an etching that is drawn before our eyes and solidifies, by dint of mass and relief. It can be swept away in an instant and reconstructed, with as much vigor, under new finery, according to the horizons.

Because this Live At Total Meeting is above all a matter of architects and landscapers. In three scenes with fleeting angles whose plans stretch out in a controlled space, the quartet sweeps from deserts to shifting sands and lush forests. More percussionist than drummer, Nicolas Lelièvre indicates without imposing, except for versatile volumes where his companions have complete freedom. He builds in a few vanishing lines teeming universes on the fertile ruins of the previous moment. This is how the falsely serene "Total 1" is born, placed on the stentorian breath of the sub-double bass flute ( Jérôme Bourdellon, another base of the trio) or on a burst of trumpet from Cappozzo... Constellation of common designs that implodes on the hair of Zingaro's bow.

This Live At Total Meeting is characterized first by a bouncing strike, an impetuous ringing or a furtive friction that inflects the whole, as in this "Total 3" where everything is born at once from the friction of the bow and the velvety breath of the flute before the drums propel the whole into a deep perspective with the appearance of chaos. A generous tumult in which we dive with delight.
